Standby power accounts for 6% of average electricity use.
Not only should you turn appliances off to eliminate standby power, you need to turn them off at the power point/wall – not just on the appliance.
Almost all electronic devices draw power, even when they're switched off at the unit.
Over a year, a microwave will generally use more power to keep its clock running than it does in actually cooking food.
To make things easier, place multiple appliances on a single or multiple switch powerboard to avoid hard-to-reach spots.
Alternatively, at very low cost, you could buy “ecoswitches” or other types of switches that remotely switch off a power point or powerboard and all of the appliances connected to it.
